Special Education Instructional Aide (Paraeducator) Substitutes


As a Special Education Instructional Aide Substitute, you have the opportunity to do the following:

  • Directly shadow and learn  Special Education  best practices with our diverse team of experienced Special Education educators.
  • Explore different school sites and gain experience working with students at a variety of grade levels.
  • Find the school environment that matches best with your strengths, interests, and teaching philosophy.
  • Establish yourself within the district and school community, and forge connections at a school site where you would like to acquire a classroom teaching position.
  • Have  a flexible work schedule. You are required to work a minimum of 36  assignments  during the 2017-18  school year.  However, you can  choose where and when you want to work. 



Essential Duties and Responsibilities 


  •  Assist  in preparing/conducting lesson plans for Special Education students.
  • Assist   in maintaining/enforcing classroom discipline to provide a positive learning environment.  Report any disciplinary issue to proper authorities.  
  • Administer examinations to students and assist teachers in evaluating and reviewing pupil profiles. 
  • Prepare, operate, and maintain instructional equipment (computers, laboratory equipment, etc) and issue required equipment to pupils when necessary.
  • May assist school staff in monitoring areas outside the classroom (hallways, locker areas, cafeteria, yard, auditorium, gymnasium, lavatories, etc).
  •  Render first aid to students and report injury incidents to the proper supervisor.
  • May assist in publicizing educational development programs by issuing information, objectives, and functions of the program.
  • Assist with pupils’ personal needs such as lifting, toileting, feeding, and diapering if required.

Hiring Process


Minimum Qualifications: 4 Ways to Qualify

  • High School Diploma and passed District  Instructional  Aide Exam; OR
  • High School Diploma and passed CBEST exam; OR
  • High  School Diploma and  48 college units; OR
  • Associate Degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual Cantonese
  • Bilingual Mandarin
  • Bilingual Spanish

  • Administrators will reach out to schedule interviews. Upon being selected into a paraprofessional position, a member of our Paraprofessional Team will contact you  to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting and paperwork. 
  • Employment is contingent upon fingerprint clearance and completion of all necessary hiring paperwork
  • All potential employees will be required to complete the following:
  1.   Fingerprinting/background check,
  2. Verification of authorization to work in the United States
  3.  Negative TB results (within 60 days of hire)

Remaining on the Substitute List

To remain on the substitute list, substitute teachers must:

  • Work at least one day per week or a minimum of 36 days per school year
  • Have a valid and active credential. Employees must renew their credential when expired
  • Have a current negative TB test result on file, (updated every 4 years)
